CARDS FOR THE PAST, PRESENT, AND FUTURE

 The well-known Bosnian divination cards called faletarke — from the word falati, meaning “to tell fortune” — represent a unique blend of mystical inspiration and everyday life. With a little effort, you will find within them many answers to your questions.

In the Bosnian tradition of divination, several mantic skills have long held an important place, such as reading coffee grounds, divining with beans, “opening the star,” and fortune-telling with cards known as faletarke.
While “opening the star” (yildizname) was usually practiced by sheikhs and hodjas, since it is based on an Arabic astrological method, all other practices were performed by gifted individuals.
Over the centuries, some of them became famous for their skill in predicting the future and were highly respected and popular among the people. However, due to communism, it was not permitted to write publicly about them or give them attention in the media.
Today, fortunately, the situation is completely different, but most of those former prophets and masters of fate have passed away.

Through years of ethnological research in Bosnia and Herzegovina, as well as fieldwork, I had the opportunity to meet many people who shared their thoughts on divination, clairvoyance, and personal experiences.
I was truly lucky to meet the late Mrs. Zumreta K., who showed me her aunt’s old cards. Her aunt was a well-known fortune-teller in her town, and Mrs. Zumreta loved to tell stories about people who came to have their cards “opened” and their destiny revealed.
What amazed me most was that, for the first time, I was able to see the very cards I had heard so much about in my childhood — the faletarke.

Although most of the cards were in poor condition, I managed to reconstruct them and restore their illustrations. Thanks to dear Mrs. Zumreta, I also obtained the interpretations for each card.
A few cards were missing from the deck, either lost or destroyed, but she remembered their names, making it possible to recreate them visually.

What you see before you today is a modernized version of those same cards, redesigned for the present era.
As you will notice, there are 46 cards in total, each with its own individual and combined meaning.
They seem simple at first glance, but the more you work with them, the more you will discover their magic, depth, and truthfulness.

Les célèbres cartes divinatoires bosniennes appelées faletarke — du mot falati, qui signifie « dire la bonne aventure » — représentent une fusion unique d’inspiration mystique et de vie quotidienne. En y prêtant un peu d’attention, vous y trouverez de nombreuses réponses à vos questions.

Dans la tradition bosnienne de la divination, plusieurs arts mantétiques ont occupé une place importante depuis longtemps : la lecture du marc de café, la divination avec des grains de haricots, « l’ouverture de l’étoile » et la voyance avec des cartes connues sous le nom de faletarke.
Alors que « l’ouverture de l’étoile » (yildizname) était généralement pratiquée par les cheikhs et les hodjas — puisqu’il s’agit d’une méthode astrologique arabe —, les autres pratiques étaient exercées par des personnes douées.
Au fil des siècles, certaines d’entre elles se sont rendues célèbres grâce à leur talent pour prédire l’avenir, et furent très respectées et populaires parmi le peuple. Mais sous le communisme, il était interdit d’écrire à leur sujet ou de leur accorder de l’importance dans les médias.
Aujourd’hui, heureusement, la situation est différente, mais la plupart de ces anciens prophètes et maîtres du destin ne sont plus de ce monde.

En étudiant pendant des années l’ethnologie de la Bosnie-Herzégovine et en menant des recherches sur le terrain, j’ai rencontré de nombreuses personnes ayant quelque chose à dire sur la divination, la clairvoyance ou leurs expériences personnelles.
J’ai eu la grande chance de rencontrer feu Madame Zumreta K., qui m’a montré les vieilles cartes de sa tante. Sa tante était une célèbre voyante dans sa ville, et Madame Zumreta aimait raconter des histoires sur les gens qui venaient pour qu’elle leur « ouvre les cartes » et leur lise le destin.
Ce qui m’a le plus émerveillé, c’est que, pour la première fois, j’ai pu voir les cartes dont j’avais tant entendu parler dans mon enfance — les faletarke.

Bien que la plupart des cartes fussent en mauvais état, j’ai réussi à les reconstituer et à restaurer leurs dessins. Grâce à la chère Madame Zumreta, j’ai aussi obtenu l’interprétation de chacune d’elles.
Quelques cartes manquaient au jeu, perdues ou détruites, mais elle en connaissait les noms, ce qui m’a permis de les recréer graphiquement.

Ce que vous voyez aujourd’hui est une version modernisée de ces mêmes cartes, adaptée à notre époque.
Elles sont au nombre de 46, chacune avec sa signification propre et combinée.
Elles semblent simples au premier abord, mais plus vous travaillerez avec elles, plus vous découvrirez leur magie, leur profondeur et leur véracité.

CARTE PER IL PASSATO, IL PRESENTE E IL FUTURO

Le famose carte divinatorie bosniache chiamate faletarke — dal termine falati, che significa “predire la fortuna” — rappresentano una fusione unica tra ispirazione mistica e vita quotidiana. Con un po’ di impegno, potrete trovare in esse molte risposte alle vostre domande.

Nella tradizione bosniaca della divinazione, varie arti mantiche hanno da sempre avuto un ruolo importante, come la lettura dei fondi di caffè, la divinazione con i fagioli, “l’apertura della stella” e la cartomanzia con le faletarke.
Mentre “l’apertura della stella” (yildizname) era praticata principalmente da sceicchi e hodja, poiché si basa su un metodo astrologico arabo, le altre arti erano esercitate da individui dotati.
Nel corso dei secoli, alcuni di loro divennero famosi per la loro abilità nel predire il futuro e furono molto rispettati e popolari tra la gente. Tuttavia, durante il comunismo, non era consentito scrivere pubblicamente su di loro o dar loro visibilità nei media.
Oggi, fortunatamente, la situazione è completamente diversa, anche se la maggior parte di quei maestri e profeti del destino è ormai scomparsa.

Studiando per anni l’etnologia della Bosnia ed Erzegovina e svolgendo ricerche sul campo, ho incontrato molte persone che avevano esperienze o riflessioni da condividere sul tema della divinazione e della chiaroveggenza.
Ho avuto la grande fortuna di conoscere la compianta signora Zumreta K., che mi mostrò le vecchie carte di sua zia.
La zia era una rinomata cartomante nella sua città, e la signora Zumreta amava raccontare storie sulle persone che la visitavano per farsi “aprire le carte” e conoscere il proprio destino.
Ciò che mi colpì di più fu il fatto che, per la prima volta, vidi le carte di cui avevo sentito tanto parlare da bambino — le faletarke.

Sebbene la maggior parte fosse in cattive condizioni, riuscii a ricostruirle e a restaurarne i disegni. Grazie alla cara signora Zumreta, ottenni anche le interpretazioni di ciascuna carta.
Alcune mancavano nel mazzo, perdute o distrutte, ma lei ricordava i loro nomi, e ciò mi permise di ricrearle graficamente.

Ciò che vedete oggi è una versione modernizzata di quelle stesse carte, adattata al nostro tempo.

KARTEN FÜR VERGANGENHEIT, GEGENWART UND ZUKUNFT

Die bekannten bosnischen Wahrsagekarten, die Faletarke genannt werden — vom Wort falati, was „wahrsagen“ bedeutet —, sind eine einzigartige Verbindung von mystischer Inspiration und Alltagsleben. Mit etwas Mühe finden Sie in ihnen viele Antworten auf Ihre Fragen.

In der bosnischen Wahrsagetradition haben seit jeher mehrere mantische Künste eine wichtige Rolle gespielt, wie das Lesen aus Kaffeesatz, das Wahrsagen mit Bohnen, das „Öffnen des Sterns“ und das Kartenlegen mit den sogenannten Faletarke.
Während das „Öffnen des Sterns“ (Yildizname) hauptsächlich von Scheichs und Hodschas praktiziert wurde, da es sich um eine arabische astrologische Methode handelt, wurden die anderen Praktiken von begabten Einzelpersonen ausgeführt.
Im Laufe der Jahrhunderte wurden einige von ihnen für ihre Fähigkeit, die Zukunft vorherzusagen, berühmt und waren im Volk hoch angesehen und beliebt.
Doch während der kommunistischen Zeit durfte man nicht öffentlich über sie schreiben oder ihnen Bedeutung in den Medien geben.
Heute ist die Situation glücklicherweise ganz anders, doch die meisten dieser alten Propheten und Meister des Schicksals sind bereits verstorben.

Durch jahrelange ethnologische Studien in Bosnien und Herzegowina und durch Feldforschung hatte ich die Gelegenheit, viele Menschen zu treffen, die über Wahrsagerei, Hellsehen und persönliche Erfahrungen sprachen.
Ich hatte großes Glück, die inzwischen verstorbene Frau Zumreta K. kennenzulernen, die mir die alten Karten ihrer Tante zeigte.
Ihre Tante war eine bekannte Wahrsagerin in ihrer Stadt, und Frau Zumreta erzählte gern Geschichten über die Menschen, die kamen, damit ihre Tante ihnen „die Karten öffnete“ und das Schicksal deutete.
Was mich am meisten beeindruckte, war, dass ich zum ersten Mal die Karten sah, von denen ich als Kind so oft gehört hatte — die Faletarke.

Obwohl die meisten Karten in schlechtem Zustand waren, gelang es mir, sie zu rekonstruieren und die Zeichnungen zu restaurieren.
Dank der lieben Frau Zumreta erhielt ich auch die Deutungen jeder einzelnen Karte.
Einige Karten fehlten, waren verloren oder zerstört, aber sie erinnerte sich an ihre Namen, sodass ihre grafische Wiederherstellung möglich war.

Was Sie heute sehen, ist eine modernisierte Version dieser Karten, die im Design an die Gegenwart angepasst wurde.
Es gibt insgesamt 46 Karten, jede mit ihrer eigenen und kombinierten Bedeutung.
Sie erscheinen einfach, doch je mehr man sich mit ihnen beschäftigt, desto mehr erkennt man ihre Magie, Tiefe und Wahrheit.

CARTAS PARA EL PASADO, EL PRESENTE Y EL FUTURO

Las conocidas cartas de adivinación bosnias llamadas faletarke — del término falati, que significa “adivinar” — son una fusión única de inspiración mística y vida cotidiana. Si se dedica un poco de atención, encontrará en ellas muchas respuestas a sus preguntas.

En la tradición bosnia de la adivinación, diversas artes mánticas han ocupado un lugar importante durante siglos: la lectura del poso del café, la adivinación con granos de frijol, la “apertura de la estrella” y la adivinación con cartas, conocidas como faletarke.
Mientras que la “apertura de la estrella” (yildizname) era practicada principalmente por jeques y hodjas, por tratarse de un método astrológico árabe, las demás eran ejercidas por individuos dotados.
A lo largo de los siglos, algunos se hicieron famosos por su habilidad para predecir el futuro y fueron muy respetados y populares entre el pueblo. Sin embargo, durante el comunismo, no se podía escribir públicamente sobre ellos ni darles importancia en los medios.
Hoy en día, por suerte, la situación es diferente, aunque la mayoría de aquellos antiguos profetas y maestros del destino ya han muerto.

Tras años de investigación etnológica en Bosnia y Herzegovina y de trabajo de campo, tuve la oportunidad de conocer a muchas personas que hablaron sobre la adivinación, la clarividencia y sus experiencias personales.
Tuve la gran suerte de conocer a la difunta señora Zumreta K., quien me mostró las viejas cartas de su tía.
Su tía era una reconocida adivina en su ciudad, y la señora Zumreta disfrutaba contando historias sobre quienes acudían a que su tía les “abriera las cartas” y les revelara el destino.
Lo que más me impresionó fue que, por primera vez, pude ver las cartas de las que tanto había oído hablar en mi infancia: las faletarke.

Aunque la mayoría de las cartas estaban en mal estado, logré reconstruirlas y restaurar sus ilustraciones. Gracias a la señora Zumreta, también obtuve las interpretaciones de cada una.
Algunas faltaban en la baraja, perdidas o destruidas, pero ella recordaba sus nombres, lo que permitió recrearlas gráficamente.

Lo que ve hoy es una versión modernizada de aquellas mismas cartas, adaptada a los tiempos actuales.
Como podrá observar, hay un total de 46 cartas, cada una con su propio y combinado significado.
Parecen simples, pero cuanto más se trabaja con ellas, más se descubre su magia, su profundidad y su veracidad.

Karta koja predstavlja nove mogućnosti ili prilike. Često uz kartu Mlin znači unapređenje na poslu, povišicu ili odlazak na bolje radno mjesto. 

Kada ova karta dodiruje kartu Društvo tada nagovještava mogućnost društvenog uspinjanja odnosno upoznavanje uticajnih osoba, ličnosti od kojih može imati neke koristi.

The Stairs

A card that represents new opportunities or possibilities.
Often, when paired with the Mill card, it indicates progress at work, a raise, or moving to a better position.
When this card touches the Society card, it foretells social advancement or the chance to meet influential people — individuals who may offer some form of benefit.

Les Escaliers

Une carte qui représente de nouvelles possibilités ou des opportunités.
Souvent, avec la carte Moulin, elle annonce une promotion, une augmentation ou un changement vers un meilleur poste.
Lorsque cette carte touche la carte Société, elle prédit une ascension sociale ou la rencontre de personnes influentes dont on peut tirer profit.

Le Scale

Carta che rappresenta nuove possibilità o opportunità.
Spesso, insieme alla carta Mulino, indica un avanzamento nel lavoro, un aumento di stipendio o il passaggio a un impiego migliore.
Quando questa carta tocca la carta Società, annuncia un’ascesa sociale o l’incontro con persone influenti dalle quali si possono ottenere vantaggi.

Die Treppe

Eine Karte, die neue Möglichkeiten oder Chancen symbolisiert.
In Verbindung mit der Karte Mühle weist sie oft auf beruflichen Aufstieg, eine Gehaltserhöhung oder einen Wechsel zu einer besseren Arbeitsstelle hin.
Berührt diese Karte die Karte Gesellschaft, kündigt sie gesellschaftlichen Aufstieg oder das Kennenlernen einflussreicher Personen an, von denen man profitieren kann.

Las Escaleras

Una carta que representa nuevas oportunidades o posibilidades.

Ovo je karta rada, produktivnosti, pa zato označava posao, radno mjesto i našu sposobnost da zaradimo. Ukoliko dodiruje kartu Vatra znači da je pitaoc radoholičar, a ako dodiruje kartu Novac tada mu posao donosi profit ili zaradu.

The Mill

This card represents work and productivity, symbolizing one’s job, workplace, and ability to earn.
If it touches the Fire card, it means the querent is a workaholic.
When it touches the Money card, it indicates that their work brings profit or financial gain.

Le Moulin

Cette carte représente le travail et la productivité ; elle symbolise le métier, le lieu de travail et la capacité de gagner sa vie.
Si elle touche la carte Feu, cela signifie que le consultant est un bourreau de travail.
Si elle touche la carte Argent, elle indique que son travail lui apporte des profits ou des gains financiers.

Il Mulino

Questa carta rappresenta il lavoro e la produttività, e simboleggia l’impiego, il posto di lavoro e la capacità di guadagnare.

El Molino

Dobitak

 

Dobitak - The Gain - Le Gain - Il Guadagno - Der Gewinn - La Ganancia

Kao i što sam naziv govori ovo je karta dobitka, dobiti koju možemo ostvariti kroz posao, koristi koju možemo izvući od drugih, familije ili prijatelja, ali i karta plodova našeg truda i rada. Kada dodiruje kartu Djevojka ili Gospođa može označavati za ženu trudnoću.

Karta Dobitak osim doslovnog značenja predstavlja i rezultat rada, kada dodiruje kartu Mlin, ali može imati i drugačije značenje, naime, kada se pozicionira uz kartu Gubitak otkriva kako pitaoc ne uspijeva stabilizirati svoju poslovnu ili financijsku situaciju.

The Gain

As its name suggests, this card represents gain — benefits that can come through work, advantages received from others, family, or friends, as well as the fruits of one’s own effort and labor.
When it touches the Girl or Lady card, it can indicate pregnancy for a woman.

Le Gain

Comme son nom l’indique, cette carte symbolise le gain — les avantages obtenus par le travail, les bénéfices provenant des autres, de la famille ou des amis, ainsi que les fruits de nos efforts et de notre labeur.
Lorsqu’elle touche la carte Jeune Fille ou Dame, elle peut annoncer une grossesse chez une femme.

Il Guadagno

Come suggerisce il suo nome, questa carta rappresenta il guadagno — i benefici che si possono ottenere attraverso il lavoro, l’aiuto degli altri, della famiglia o degli amici, ma anche i frutti del proprio impegno e fatica.
Quando tocca la carta Ragazza o Signora, può indicare una gravidanza per una donna.

Der Gewinn

Wie der Name schon sagt, steht diese Karte für Gewinn — Vorteile, die durch Arbeit, durch andere Menschen, Familie oder Freunde entstehen, sowie für die Früchte der eigenen Mühe und Arbeit.
Berührt sie die Karte Mädchen oder Dame, kann sie bei einer Frau auf eine Schwangerschaft hinweisen.

La Ganancia

Como su nombre lo indica, esta carta representa la ganancia — los beneficios que pueden provenir del trabajo, de otras personas, de la familia o de los amigos, así como los frutos del propio esfuerzo y dedicación.
Cuando toca la carta Joven o Señora, puede indicar un embarazo en una mujer.

Torba

Karta dolaska ili odlaska, ovisno gdje se nalazi u redanju i koje karte dodiruje. Može označavati našu imovinu, a uz kartu Nova kuća skoro uvijek predskazuje odlazak u drugi grad, zemlju ili jednostavno - selidbu. Pored karte Stara kuća govori da se vraćamo na staro, u prijašnje stanje koje smo ostavili. 

The Bag

A card of arrival or departure, depending on its position in the spread and the cards it touches.
It may represent one’s possessions, and when paired with the New House card, it almost always foretells a move to another city, country, or simply — relocation.
Next to the Old House card, it suggests a return to something from the past, to a former state or place we once left behind.

 Le Sac

Carte du départ ou de l’arrivée, selon sa position dans le tirage et les cartes qu’elle touche.
Elle peut représenter nos biens, et, associée à la carte Maison Neuve, elle annonce presque toujours un déménagement vers une autre ville, un autre pays ou simplement un changement de résidence.
Placée à côté de la carte Vieille Maison, elle indique un retour au passé, à une situation ou un lieu que l’on avait quittés.

La Borsa

Carta di partenza o di arrivo, a seconda della posizione nel gioco e delle carte che la toccano.
Può rappresentare i nostri beni, e insieme alla carta Casa Nuova quasi sempre predice un trasferimento in un’altra città, paese o semplicemente un cambio di casa.
Accanto alla carta Casa Vecchia indica un ritorno al passato, a una condizione o a un luogo che avevamo lasciato.

Die Tasche

Eine Karte des Aufbruchs oder der Ankunft – je nach ihrer Position in der Legung und den Karten, die sie berührt.
Sie kann den eigenen Besitz symbolisieren, und in Verbindung mit der Karte Neues Haus kündigt sie fast immer einen Umzug in eine andere Stadt, ein anderes Land oder einfach einen Wohnungswechsel an.
Neben der Karte Altes Haus weist sie auf eine Rückkehr in frühere Zustände oder an einen Ort hin, den man einst verlassen hat.

La Bolsa

Carta de llegada o partida, según su posición en la tirada y las cartas que la rodean.
Puede representar nuestras posesiones, y junto a la carta Casa Nueva casi siempre predice una mudanza a otra ciudad, país o simplemente un cambio de residencia.
Al lado de la carta Casa Vieja, anuncia un regreso al pasado, a un estado o lugar que habíamos dejado atrás.

Prijatelj

 

Prijatelj - The Friend - L’Ami - L’Amico - Der Freund - El Amigo

Karta prijateljstva, dobrih odnosa, ali i sklapanja dogovora, poslova, novih poznanstava - ovisno koju kartu dodiruje. Može predstavljati povjerenje u nekoga, pomirenje, novu priliku.

The Friend

A card of friendship, good relationships, and also the making of agreements, business deals, or new acquaintances — depending on the card it touches.
It may represent trust in someone, reconciliation, or a new opportunity.

L’Ami

Carte de l’amitié, des bonnes relations, mais aussi des accords, des affaires ou de nouvelles rencontres — selon la carte qu’elle touche.
Elle peut représenter la confiance envers quelqu’un, la réconciliation ou une nouvelle opportunité.

 L’Amico

Carta dell’amicizia, dei buoni rapporti e anche della conclusione di accordi, affari o nuove conoscenze — a seconda della carta che tocca.
Può rappresentare la fiducia in qualcuno, la riconciliazione o una nuova opportunità.

Der Freund

Eine Karte der Freundschaft, guter Beziehungen, aber auch von Vereinbarungen, Geschäften oder neuen Bekanntschaften — je nachdem, welche Karte sie berührt.
Sie kann Vertrauen in jemanden, Versöhnung oder eine neue Chance symbolisieren.

El Amigo

Carta de amistad, de buenas relaciones, pero también de acuerdos, negocios o nuevos encuentros — según la carta que toque.
Puede representar la confianza en alguien, la reconciliación o una nueva oportunidad.

Raskršće

 

Raskršće - The Crossroads - Le Carrefour - Il Bivio - Die Wegkreuzung - La Encrucijada

Ovo je karta koja odvaja ljude, pa nema povoljno značenje ako dodiruje kartu Ljubav ili kartu Prijatelj, jer tada najavljuje razilaženje, raskid, prekid nekog odnosa na duže ili kraće vrijeme. Simbolizira neodlučnost, nesigurnost. Najavljuje potrebu da se donese odluka, nešto odluči.

 Kada se karta Raskršće pozicionira uz kartu Duh: bićete namjerno dovedeni u zabludu od strane osobe kojoj vjerujete. Budite oprezni.

The Crossroads

This is a card that separates people, and therefore it has an unfavorable meaning when it touches the Love or Friend card, as it then announces a separation, breakup, or interruption of a relationship for a shorter or longer period.
It symbolizes indecision and uncertainty. It foretells the need to make a choice — to decide on something.

Le Carrefour

C’est une carte qui sépare les gens, et elle n’a donc pas une signification favorable lorsqu’elle touche la carte Amour ou la carte Ami, car elle annonce alors une séparation, une rupture ou une interruption de relation pour un temps plus ou moins long.
Elle symbolise l’indécision et l’incertitude. Elle indique la nécessité de faire un choix, de prendre une décision.

Il Bivio

È una carta che separa le persone, quindi non ha un significato favorevole quando tocca la carta Amore o Amico, poiché in tal caso annuncia una separazione, una rottura o una pausa in un rapporto, temporanea o duratura.
Simbolizza indecisione e incertezza. Indica la necessità di prendere una decisione, di scegliere una direzione.

Die Wegkreuzung

Karta konflikta, zamjeranja, ljutnje, ukoliko se nađe kod neke ljudske karte ili između njih. Pored karte Starac označava neke stare svađe, probleme i neriješene konflikte. Ako dodiruje kartu Belaj ili kartu Hasum - prijeti vam velika opasnost.

Krevet

 

Ova karta  može označavati odmor, bolest, senzualne užitke, ovisno koju kartu dodiruje. Ako stoji pored karte Nova kuća onda predviđa pitaocu kupovinu novog namještaja ili auta. 

Vaga

 Karta pravde, istine, suda, ovisno koju kartu dodiruje u redu. U slučaju da dodiruje pitaoca onda otkriva kako je on/ona osoba koja teži savršenstvu, uvijek se trudi, želi da nauči i zna se boriti za sebe, mrzi nepravdu. Pored karte Novac - podijela imovine.

Kada se dotična karta nađe uz kartu Stare ili Nove kuće, tada obično znači da ta familija nema nikakvog napretka. 

Haber

 

Ptica kao simbol vijesti označava dolazak nekog povoljnog glasa, vijesti ili novu informaciju. Kada ova karta dodiruje kartu Haber ili kartu Vrata na pomolu je rješenje nekog problema, svađe, zapreke ili pak ozdravljenje.
